Referee Information

Interested in Becoming a Referee?

Refereeing can be a great experience for youth soccer players and adults alike. Below are a few of the many benefits of becoming a referee:

  • Increased knowledge of the Laws of the Game which can benefit players and parents
  • Great part time job, click here to see the ref fees for various age groups
  • Extra exercise is always nice
  • Becoming a referee is a great way to give back to the game of soccer

Participants must be at least 13-years-old at the start of the clinic to be eligible to attend a new Grassroots Referee course. Individuals over the age of 18 will be required to complete the SafeSport certification and successfully pass a background check.

The New Grassroots Referee training course is a 16-hour course with half of the time spent online and the other half in the classroom. It is designed to provide entry level referees skills and information through classroom and field training. Emphasis is on preparing for Grassroots program participation – including recreational and competitive games. Field emphasis is on the practice of specific procedures.

There are costs associated with becoming a referee – you should budget for approximately $100-$125. First time referees certified in 2024, the cost of taking the referee training will be reimbursed by WI Youth Soccer after the course has been completed.
